2014: That Werks Year In Review

My favorite blog post of the year has to be the last one. I get to look back at the work over the past year and let it breathe. Thanks to each and every client, friend and family member for making 2014 a great year.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a birthday to get ready for. Make 2015 count, folks!

Duke Island Park with The Simkos

Duke Island Park with The Simkos

It was a cold day at Duke Island Park, but the hour flew by with two little ones. It almost looked like a fall session with all of the leaves on the ground, but it was definitely a cold December day. The biggest tip I can give you when taking photos of children is knowing when they are in the moment and when they’re not. If they aren’t, just let them run around and do their thing. I lucked out that I got the perfect mix of both. I could pose them where I needed to, but for the most part these are just kids being kids.

Rima’s Maternity Session at Home

I like nice people. Photographing nice people and hanging out with them is one of the incredible benefits of photography. If you’re nice, you’re already more than halfway to a successful photo session. If you’re nice AND have an adorable dog it’s pretty much a guaranteed success. Rima invited me to her growing family’s home to do a maternity session. Their sense of interior design contributed to warm and cozy images. It’s fun to imagine their child looking back in a few years and seeing what life was like just before they arrived.

Hoboken Manhattan Skyline Maternity Session

Hoboken Manhattan Skyline Maternity Session

Hoboken train station is a great place to take maternity photos. It’s old and has a lot of character. The ferry slips have a gritty industrial flavor that worked beautifully with the bright green sari. Mindi and Sher deserved something super cool so we used that space to our advantage.

The adjacent park gives a wonderful panorama of the New York skyline as well as the Hoboken terminal. Mindi is due at any moment so I was careful not to have her trek all over the place without asking first. Personally I love having the couple share in the experience of the session. I’ve had great results with this approach.

Thanks to Mindi and Sher for being great subjects to photograph and going along for the creative ride.

Note to future clients: The train station is crawling with transit police demanding $500 permits to take photos. I found that out toward the end of the shoot. Hoboken you are being very greedy!

Lifestyle Session at The Jersey Shore

Lifestyle Session at The Jersey Shore

If one lesson was learned during this shoot, it’s that the rain clouds had our number. Each time I set up for a shot involving more than one light…RAIN! You have to know we kept trying though and came away with some great running shots. We photographed around Spring Lake, New Jersey swapping outfits and getting excellent lifestyle shots for Andrea’s agent.
