An Engagement Session Featuring a Latin Circus, Rolling Pin Violence and Matching Flannel Apparel

An Engagement Session Featuring a Latin Circus, Rolling Pin Violence and Matching Flannel Apparel

If you are looking for a “normal” engagement session, I officially don’t do them anymore. This engagement session is next level. The Latin Circus discovery happened on accident and my only regret is it seemed to be vacant that day or else we would have definitely tamed a lion. I’ve known these two characters for a while now and enjoy seeing two wacky people that genuinely care for one another. It’s a pleasure to shoot the reality of it all. When I asked Vin to lay down on a questionable furry rug and have Jenna rule over him like a Queen…they both did it. Top notch effort all around.

I haven’t really talked about my gear much lately. These days I shoot on the Sony A7RII which is definitely the most versatile camera body I’ve ever used. For both my photo and cinema work, there really hasn’t been anything engineered like this camera. The quality of the final images is slamming, the files are easy to work with and the dynamic range through the roof. Not to mention it has in-camera image stabilization. In the new year I will be transitioning over to Sony lenses. Far less weight, much sharper and less expense than the EOS mount lenses I currently use with a Metabones adapter. The Sony Carl Zeiss and G Master lenses are designed to take full advantage of all the bells and whistles the camera offers me.

Now let’s cut to the chase and behold the greatness of Vin and Jenna’s engagement session highlights!

Engagement Session at The Art Factory in Paterson, NJ

Brooke for Cleri Models at The Art Factory

Brooke for Cleri Models at The Art Factory

Brooke is one of the latest fresh faces to come through the doors of Cleri Models and I got to photograph her recently at my studio in Paterson, NJ.

We went through several hair and makeup changes throughout the day, but I think the hippie look definitely had the most impact. The natural light throughout the studio was perfection, but we did light some of the scenes artificially with flash. A Lastolite softbox containing one flash is a powerful tool for working quickly and yields nice, flattering, warm light.

Special thanks to Makeup by Wanida for another great job on hair and makeup and LFM for superior assistance start to finish.

To schedule your photography session, contact me through my web site. Enough blabbing and more showing. Below are highlights from the session.

A Real Honor Regarding My Photography

A Real Honor Regarding My Photography

This is something I did not expect. My cousin posted this yesterday about “Bring Your Daughter To Work Day”. She brought her daughter Grace.

“They were asked Whom They Most Admire…. And ummm this is what Grace drew….
My Cousin Christopher…. Because she feels she would like to pursue photography and bring out her inner artist in the future….
I thought it was very cool….”

CRAZINESS! I get so wrapped up in making sure I love my work and a nice result of that is others do too. It’s a huge compliment that someone would recognize my work like that. It’s important that my work strikes a chord with the younger generation.

Always strive for perfection, but know when it cannot be attained. Keep snapping away with your camera, Grace. See if you can convince your parents to get you a small camera to shoot black & white film. I still develop my own black & white film at home. Working in a darkroom will help you further appreciate the power of a single photograph. Keep having fun with whatever you choose to do!

Photography workshop in warehouse

Photography workshop in warehouse

dunellen_models_warehouse_IMG_1624_2011_06_16-Edit.jpgThe five of us (Eric Gautier, Kelly Formus, Richard Flores, and Andrea Figueredo) got together in June 2011 for another photography workshop. This time it was in an abandoned warehouse. Vacant warehouse. We had two models named Aamira and Heather. Andrea handled makeup duties and did a fantastic job!

I try to keep my equipment bags as light as possible, so I once again shot with Canon Speedlites. Since I shoot in full manual mode, even with flashes, I have total control over each exposure. I can appreciate Canon’s E-TTL function, but I still prefer manually setting all of my equipment when I have the luxury of time.dunellen_models_warehouse_IMG_1863_2011_06_16.jpg

The warehouse was massive, so each of us could should wherever we wanted without getting  cramped. Toward the rear of the building stood a huge brick wall which turned out to be one of the best backgrounds.

We kept things moving throughout the night sharing each other’s setups and eventually it was time to break out my favorite piece of equipment; THE FOG MACHINE! I don’t like to overuse it, but it’s definitely great for adding a little extra something to a scene.dunellen_models_warehouse_IMG_1803_2011_06_16-Edit.jpg I will usually manipulate it a bit in post-processing, but having it there in the actual scene helps keep the effect grounded in reality.

Thanks to our fantastic and professional models Aamira Garba and Heather Dorian. Special thanks to Pablo for providing us with a motorcycle and modeling for a few shots.

Laser Xpressions photo shoot

Laser Xpressions photo shoot

laser_xpressions_products_IMG_1262_2011_05_25.jpgA while back I was asked to photograph products for Laser Xpressions in Freehold, NJ. This project was done on site and I got to see behind-the-scenes of how these laser engraved products are created. Very impressive process! There is a large piece of equipment that very carefully beams light into a piece of glass creating a small air bubble. One beam after another. Thousands of them! Put enough of those bubbles next to one another and you have an amazing piece of artwork.
