The Grunge Look In Asbury Park

Asbury Park. Dirty, unclean, unsafe, bombed-out Asbury Park. Things are changing from those descriptions to things like fun, delicious, historical, lovely, etc. Luckily the town survived long enough to experience a renaissance. My goal for this shoot was to embrace the grunge side of Asbury Park that is quickly fading from the landscape.  They have been cleaning up Asbury for years now so it’s getting harder to find bombed-out parts of town to shoot in.

I threw a few challenges at myself for this one. The weather was sketchy first of all. Secondly, I didn’t bring an assistant. Third, I was shooting three people (two of which I haven’t photographed before.) I like to do these sorts of things to myself to generate new ideas and finding faster ways of working by myself.  You don’t always have an assistant.

I limited myself to the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens and the Canon 70-200mm f/4.0 for this shoot. I love the 50mm for just about everything, including portraits. It can be trusted to remain razor sharp wide open. Most of this shoot was all 50mm. So much can be done with this lens that it makes my head spin. For those shooting on a 6D, or any camera with a shutter slower than 1/4000 of a second I would highly recommend purchasing a neutral density filter.
